Italy has many towns built on top of
hills to be better defensible. Families
within the towns built fortified towers
for further defense from outsiders and,
sometimes, from neighbors. Although
most of these towns have torn done
their towers, San Gimignano is one
that has kept many of its towers.
This map shows where San Gimignano
is relative to Florence.
Locations in Florence are shown on
the next page.
