This same map was used for the Amalfi
Coast. The ancient city of Pompeii in the
commune of Pompei is marked with a red
highlight near the center of the map. In 79
AD, Pompeii was buried under 13 to 20
feet of ash by an eruption of Mt. Vesuvius,
whose crater is marked with a red dot
northwest of the city. It has been well
preserved by having been sealed away
from the air. Some of the city has been
excavated and is open for tours. The task
of excavation continues.
